Theories and Methods
Our Theories
This is all about energy and consciousness.
The Big Question: Is the vital energy which comprises a human being's consciousness (personality, soul, etc.) released intact from its bodily constraints in a functioning state at the time of physical "death" or does that energy cease to function or exist altogether?
In our experience dealing with paranormal phenomena over the past eight years, human consciousness DOES survive physical "death" in the form of individual energy fields which are mobile, detectable, intelligent, interactive and retain distinct characteristics of an individual's personality and memories. How is this possible?
Kinetic energy is the energy of motion (electrical, radiant, thermal, sound and motion). Potential energy can be either stored energy (chemical, mechanical and nuclear) or positional energy (gravitational). Living human beings have kinetic energy (electrical) and potential energy (chemical) active in their bodies at all times.
A person's heart and brain each produce an electrical energy field which can be measured with a machine called an Electrocardiogram (EKG). Science has also discovered that living human tissues and organs produce specific magnetic pulsations known as biomagnetic fields. The combination of these types of fields produces a weak electromagnetic field around the human body. The energy which comprises this field can be photographed with a special camera and will expand or contract according to the emotional state of the person. These properties suggest that the human energy field is influenced by thoughts and feelings.
The Law of Conservation of Mass states that matter in a closed system can change form, but cannot be created or destroyed. Likewise, the Law of Conservation of Energy states that energy in a closed system can only change from one form of energy into another form of energy. It cannot be created or destroyed.
The two laws above were merged into the Law of Conservation of Mass-Energy when Albert Einstein, Time Magazine's Man of the Century and one of the greatest minds the world has known, announced his famous equation E=mc2. This new scientific law states that the total amount of mass and energy in the universe is constant.
When a person "dies", the mass of his or her chemically based body begins to break down and decompose. It changes form, but its total mass does not change. But what about the electrical energy that flowed through the person's brain and nervous system and powered his or her thoughts and actions? It can't be destroyed. That would contradict the laws of science. It has to continue existing as some form of energy.
We believe that the vital energy which is released when a person's body ceases to function is electromagnetic in nature and retains the essence of the person's consciousness, similar to the manner in which digital information can be stored on magnetic media. This type of energy is detectable with sensitive instruments known as EMF meters (ElectroMagnetic Field meters). We have used these instruments to facilitate interactive question and answer sessions with unseen, but sentient fields of energy in active locations. These interactive exchanges have been documented in audio and video recordings, some of which are presented on our website.
Our Methods
- IMPORTANT! Never trespass on private or posted property! Always obtain written permission from the property owner or appropriate authorities before entering private or posted property!
- Need proof that you should never trespass? (88KB)
- Need more proof that you should never trespass? (124KB)
Over time, we have developed standard routines which we follow during all of our investigations. Most are common sense procedures and others have been learned through trial and error. In our opinion, here are the most important methods which should be used in all paranormal investigations.
It is important to note that the majority of "ghost" photos posted on the Internet are nothing more that photos of dust, moisture, insects, pollen, etc. It is extremely rare to capture paranormal energy in a photo, so always verify any anomalies by immediately taking another photo if you see something unusual in your digital photos.
- Common Sense Ghost Hunting
- Keep proper identification with you at all times. Many cemeteries only allow visitations during daylight hours, so do not enter them at night or you may risk being arrested. You can obtain reliable EMF meter readings and valid EVP recordings at cemeteries during the day as easily as you can at night.
- Investigation DOs
- DO investigate each location with a positive attitude, an open mind and a healthy amount of skepticism. Try to recreate all reported paranormal events and eliminate all possible natural explanations before reaching a final conclusion.
- DO be respectful at all times and follow the Golden Rule for best results and for safety's sake.
- DO scout each outdoor investigation site during daylight hours if possible and make a note of hazards such as holes, fences, etc. which might cause injuries in the dark.
- DO turn off all cell phones before starting an investigation and leave them outside the investigation area if possible. They can produce false readings from EMF meters.
- DO use fresh batteries in all equipment and carry spare batteries with you to replace any which become drained during an investigation.
- DO wear a watch and keep a log of all paranormal events which occur during an investigation. Note the time of the event, a brief description, witnesses present, your feelings, etc. This can be an audio log or a written log.
- Investigation DON'Ts
- DON’T investigate alone! You’ll need help if you are injured or confronted, and you’ll also need a witness if you experience a paranormal event.
- DON’T provoke! You're only asking for trouble or the likelihood of being ignored when you provoke paranormal energies. Always follow the Golden Rule for best results and for safety's sake.
- DON’T drink before or during an investigation. Alcohol and paranormal experiences do not mix well.
- DON’T engage in horseplay or pranks during an investigation. Both are counterproductive and potentially dangerous.
- DON’T wear perfume or cologne during an investigation. They can interfere with the perception of true paranormal scents.
- Photography DOs
- DO ask permission to take photos. It may seem strange at first, but you'll get better results if you acknowledge the presence of paranormal energies and you’re also friendly and respectful.
- DO keep your camera strap wrapped around your wrist or remove it when taking photos. A camera's flash reflected off the strap can produce a false positive in photos which can easily be mistaken for a vortex, a light anomaly which looks like a column of light.
- DO keep your hair pulled back or tied back so it won't accidentally fall in front of the camera lens. A camera's flash reflected from a single strand of hair can produce a false positive in photos which can be easily mistaken for a vortex, a light anomaly which looks like a column of light.
- DO hold your breath momentarily when taking photos in cold weather. Moisture from breathing can produce false positives in photos which can easily be mistaken for paranormal energy that sometimes appears as a mist or fog.
- DO tell the photo lab technician that you want all of your negatives printed including those which may show unusual lights or mists in them when you drop off 35 mm film for processing.
- Photography DON'Ts
- DON’T smoke during an investigation and ask others to refrain from smoking too. Cigarette or cigar smoke can produce false positives in photos which can easily be mistaken for paranormal energy that sometimes appears as a mist or fog.
- DON’T take photos in adverse weather conditions such as rain, fog or snow or in windy or dusty conditions. Camera flash reflections in these conditions will almost always produce false positives in photos which can easily be mistaken for “orbs”, anomalies which look like small spheres of light.
- DON’T take photos through glass surfaces such as windows. Camera flashes reflected from glass surfaces can produce false positives in photos which can easily be mistaken for faces or figures but are actually the effects of simulacra.
- DON’T take photos when a light source such as the sun is directly in front of you. Refraction caused by the sun’s rays striking your camera’s lens can produce false positives in photos which can easily be mistaken for “orbs”, anomalies which look like small spheres of light.
- Recording DOs
- DO ask permission to record voices or video images. It may seem strange at first, but you’ll get better results if you acknowledge the presence of paranormal energies and you’re friendly and respectful.
- DO connect an external omnidirectional microphone to analog audio tape recorders and place the end of the microphone as far from the tape recorder as possible to avoid recording internal gear noise. Digital recorders don't have internal moving parts, so the use of microphones with them is optional although we’ve found that external microphones provide better frequency response and clearer recordings than built-in microphones.
- DO use new “brand name” audio tapes with analog audio and video recorders and only record on one side of the tape to eliminate the possibility of noise bleed-through. Normal bias analog audio tapes yield excellent results. After recording, break off or slide recording tabs to the “safe” position to safeguard your recordings.
- Recording DON'Ts
- DON’T whisper during an investigation. Whispers or low voices can be easily mistaken for EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena or discarnate voices) and will make the job of finding and authenticating EVPs on audio and video recordings much more difficult. If you sneeze or cough, or if your stomach rumbles, make a note of the time or announce it out loud so that everyone will know the source of questionable sounds.
- DON’T walk into an area where other investigators have placed audio or video recorders without announcing the time of your arrival and departure loudly so that any noises you make won't be mistaken for EVPs.
