- Built in 1849, Magnolia Manor was home to three generations of the Miller family, some of whom have apparently never left
Only a one hour drive east of Memphis, Magnolia Manor's haunted reputation rests securely on the numerous credible apparition sightings and reports of paranormal activity witnessed there on an ongoing basis by guests and staff alike. Our team has investigated this historic Bed & Breakfast numerous times since August 2004, and we've never been disappointed.
During our very first Paranormal Investigator Training Workshop/Overnight Ghost Hunts & Vigils™ in March 2006, a workshop guest and three of our Memphis - Mid South Ghost Hunters team members witnessed the full body apparition of a Civil War era woman in the entrance hall as she "walked" slowly past the Ladies' Parlor downstairs.
Another sighting occurred during our June 2007 workshop when a guest saw a full body apparition walk through the entrance hallway into the Gentlemen's Parlor (read her testimonial below). From an old photo, she later identified the person she saw as Annie Miller, the last Miller family member who lived in the house. Miss Annie, as she was fondly known, died in 1972 at the age of 84.
Visible orbs of light and shadow figures have been seen in various rooms of the house by our workshop guests. Others have been touched by unseen forces. A phantom cat is often heard meowing in different rooms of the house. Coins have been moved, lights turn on and off by themselves and doors open and shut when no one is around.
The following workshop testimonial is just one of many we've received from satisfied workshop guests. Visit our Testimonials page to read more.
- “I saw my first full body apparition, and that was the main reason I came! It was around 4:30 in the afternoon. We were standing in the foyer of the manor talking to one of the ghost hunters when I saw an older lady coming down the hallway toward us. I thought she was real, so I didn’t think much of it at the time. Later, I was thinking about it and asked my two friends if they had seen where she had gone. They had no idea of what I was talking about! Thanks for giving the workshop!”

Bianca Phillips, a reporter for the Memphis Flyer newspaper attended the same workshop with a friend. Their exciting experiences were published in the Memphis Flyer's cover story, "Bumps in the Dark", on July 12, 2007. Following is an excerpt from the article:
After the event-filled EVP session, I was certain the place was rife with paranormal activity. It's 2:30 a.m., but, scared to sleep, Greg and I play an hour-long game of Monopoly. I only admit defeat when I begin falling asleep in between turns.
Greg turns the lights off but props the hallway door open so some light shines in. There's no way I'm sleeping in complete darkness in a haunted house. I pull the covers way over my head and hold on tight. If Priscilla decides to visit, she'll have to fight to remove the covers.
Greg, still eager to see some ghost action, lies in bed awake, waiting for something to happen. Just as I'm dozing off, I hear, "Hey, do you feel that?"
"What?" I ask, afraid to hear the answer.
"I think there's something sitting on the end of my side of the bed. Do you feel that? It feels like the bed is pressing down near my feet," Greg says.
I can feel some pressure near the foot of the bed. The mattress is depressed, as if someone is weighing down one end. Then, it lets up and the feeling is gone. Lying awake scared, I stare into the open hallway door.
Suddenly, a shadow passes across the opening, as if someone (or something) is walking down the hallway. I shudder and glance at the clock. It's 3:26 a.m. And then I fall asleep.

Workshops Room Selection
Three spacious and comfortable guest rooms, the C. A. Miller Suite, the 1849 Room and Annie's Room, are located upstairs in the main house. The Cottage is a separate small building in the side yard of the estate and was originally the slave quarters and detached kitchen during Civil War times.
After these four rooms have been reserved for a particular workshop date, we can offer the Judge Austin MIller Suite which is located downstairs in the main house. This spacious room is the personal bedroom of Elaine Cox, the owner and operator of Magnolia Manor Bed & Breakfast.
- C. A. Miller Suite
- Upstairs in the Main House
In December 2005, a Magnolia Manor Bed & Breakfast guest was awakened at 3:00 AM by humming in this room. When the guest sat up in bed, she saw and heard the rocking chair near the fireplace rocking back and forth. As she watched, an apparition of an elderly woman materialized in the rocking chair for a few seconds before fading away. Memphis - Mid South Ghost Hunters team members have heard audible phantom voices in this room and have seen the door open and shut when no one was around. Numerous EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena) have also been recorded in this room. Our workshop guests often hear a cat meowing in the parlor area of this suite, and there are no cats in the house.
- 1849 Room
- Upstairs in the Main House
Several years ago, a Magnolia Manor Bed & Breakgast guest was awakened by an apparition resembling Priscilla McNeal, a relative of the Miller family who were the original owners of Magnolia Manor. A painting thought to be Priscilla's death portrait hangs over the fireplace in this room. The guest fled the room and refused to return even to retrieve his luggage. Orbs of light have been photographed in this room by Memphis - Mid South Ghost Hunters team members. Our workshop guests have also been touched by unseen forces here. During our December 2006 training workshop, everyone present audibly heard and recorded the sound of clinking glasses in this room.
- Annie's Room
- Upstairs in the Main House
In December 2005, a Magnolia Manor Bed & Breakfast guest reported that she was awakened in this room by someone pulling the covers on the bed. When she looked up, she saw the apparition of an elderly woman dressed in a white muslin nightgown and holding a candle. After moving to the other side of the bed, she looked back to see that the lady had vanished. In October 2006 during the annual Magnolia Manor Ghost Tours, a guest staying in this room recorded a voice whispering the name "Annie", and an incredible photograph of a moving paranormal energy was taken here the next night. Objects, including heavy luggage, are often moved in this room during the night.
- The Cottage
- Beside the Main House
This small, quaint red brick building was originally the slave quarters and detached kitchen of Magnolia Manor during its early history. In April 2006, a local doctor rented the Cottage for a month and reported two separate apparition sightings of an African-American woman wearing a long dress, an apron and a kerchief on her head, typical attire of kitchen servants from the antebellum era. Sharlette Pumphrey, a well known spiritual medium, also visited the house several years ago and sensed the presence of three African-American spirits from Civil War times: a woman, a teenage girl and a young female child. The Cottage is located in the side yard at Magnolia Manor and is perfect for workshop guests who want extra privacy.
- Judge Austin Miller Suite
- Downstairs in the Main House
This beautifully furnished suite is the personal bedroom of Elaine Cox, the owner and operator of Magnolia Manor Bed & Breakfast. During the annual Ghost Tours in October 2008, Mrs. Cox witnessed an incredible display of paranormal energy in this room which she described as a human size mass of shimmering energy which moved slowly through the room, lingering at the foot of her bed and then moving around to the side of the bed. After several minutes, the energy slowly moved back into the doorway and then disappated. Lights have turned on and off in this room by themselves and doors have opened and shut when no one was around. There is documented proof that Mary Miller, the wife of Judge Austin Miller, the builder of the house, died in this room. The Judge Austin Miller Suite is available ONLY after the other four rooms above have been reserved for a particular workshop date.
