- The hallway where we heard and recorded phantom footsteps during our first investigation in July 2007
We first visited this site in July 2007 to investigate reports of a haunting involving repeated sightings of a young girl from an earlier time period. Employees of the community center told us about their personal encounters with this phantom child, as well as previous sightings by other employees dating back to the 1980's. The apparition of an older girl has also been seen dancing down a hallway in stocking feet.
Shadowy figures, disembodied voices and moved objects have been reported by employees and visitors to the community center over the years. During our first investigation there, we heard and recorded phantom footsteps in one of the hallways, confirming the authenticity of the haunting to us.
The following excerpt is taken from an article about the Singleton Community Center haunting which appeared in a Memphis newspaper several years ago:
A female ghost nicknamed "Mary" is said to haunt SIngleton Community Center at 7266 Third Road.
The first encounter with Mary was in 1986, said Shan Criswell, director of the center. An office worker was closing up for the night and thought she was the only one in the building until she heard a small voice ask if she could call her mom. A girl about 10 years old stood there. She was wearing a white sweater.
The office worker said "sure," and turned to get the phone. When she turned back around to give it to the girl, no one was there. She looked down the hall and even outside before it dawned on her that she hadn't heard anyone enter or exit the office.
"There was a spring on the door that made it stay shut." Criswell said. "So you heard it open and shut. Dana (the office worker who saw the apparition) left shortly after that."
Scott Blanton, a maintenance worker, has had his own odd experiences at Singleton. Blanton says he's one of the few people who have actually had a conversation with the ghost.
He went to clean one of the bathrooms one evening and called to see if anyone was inside. "I heard someone say 'no,'" he recalled. "It sounded like a child, but no one was there."

- Singleton Community Center workshop guests try out loaner EMF meters during a workshop investigation
An article published earlier in the same newspaper mentions an employee's encounter with a bluish light and a door that shut by itself:
Scott Lyon, assistant night supervisor of the Athletic Department at Singleton Community Center, made the mistake of being in the building alone one night not too long ago. Lyon, 24, said he had returned some items to storage and was locking the door when he heard the sound of someone walking behind him.
"I thought it was one of our guys helping me and putting stuff away," Lyon said. "But it turned out that everybody that came with me was on the other side of the building. Nobody was over there with me. So I'm still locking the door and I hear the same sound again."
As he turned to see who it might be, he realized he was alone. Then he noticed a bright white light with a bluish tint manifesting itself behind the door across the hallway.
"I saw this bright figure behind the door just before it shut by itself", Lyon said. "I kind of freaked out and I ran halfway through the building."
Lyon did draw a couple of conclusions from his experience. He said the light he saw as the door was closing had a bluish tint, very similar to the same color attributed to Mary's dress and that the brightest part of the light was at the same height as a young girl.
"To this day, I believe I saw her. It was enough to frighten me and make me actually believe in it," Lyon said.

- The hallway where workshop guests witnessed an incredible display of EMF meter interaction
During our first Paranormal Investigator Training workshop at Singleton Community Center in November 2007, eight of our workshop guests witnessed an incredible display of EMF meter interaction with an intelligent paranormal energy, possibly that of the young girl who has been seen by community center employees.
In a dark hallway in the rear of the building, each of the EMF meters being held by our female workshop guests lit up one by one and began to beep continuously. At the same time, the EMF meter being held by SP responded to questions which were asked by various members of the group. This amazing paranormal event lasted almost five minutes until one of the workshop guests asked a question about the girl's father. At that moment, all of the EMF meters simultaneously stopped responding.
Our workshop guests and Memphis - Mid South Ghost Hunters team members have experienced other paranormal phenomena during subsequent training workshops as we continue to investigate this site on a monthly basis. We invite you to join us for one of our upcoming monthly two-hour Paranormal Investigator Training Workshops at Singleton Community Center.
